RESUMO

Heterozygous mutations in COL10A1 lead to metaphyseal chondrodysplasia type Schmid (MCDS), a skeletal disorder characterized by epiphyseal abnormalities. Prior analysis revealed impaired trimerization and intracellular retention of mutant collagen type X alpha 1 chains as cause for elevated endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress. However, how ER stress translates into structural defects remained unclear. We generated a medaka (Oryzias latipes) MCDS model harboring a 5 base pair deletion in col10a1, which led to a frameshift and disruption of 11 amino acids in the conserved trimerization domain. col10a1Δ633a heterozygotes recapitulated key features of MCDS and revealed early cell polarity defects as cause for dysregulated matrix secretion and deformed skeletal structures. Carbamazepine, an ER stress-reducing drug, rescued this polarity impairment and alleviated skeletal defects in col10a1Δ633a heterozygotes. Our data imply cell polarity dysregulation as a potential contributor to MCDS and suggest the col10a1Δ633a medaka mutant as an attractive MCDS animal model for drug screening.

RESUMO

We previously described an approach called RealSeqS to evaluate aneuploidy in plasma cell-free DNA through the amplification of ~350,000 repeated elements with a single primer. We hypothesized that an unbiased evaluation of the large amount of sequencing data obtained with RealSeqS might reveal other differences between plasma samples from patients with and without cancer. This hypothesis was tested through the development of a machine learning approach called Alu Profile Learning Using Sequencing (A-PLUS) and its application to 7615 samples from 5178 individuals, 2073 with solid cancer and the remainder without cancer. Samples from patients with cancer and controls were prespecified into four cohorts used for model training, analyte integration, and threshold determination, validation, and reproducibility. A-PLUS alone provided a sensitivity of 40.5% across 11 different cancer types in the validation cohort, at a specificity of 98.5%. Combining A-PLUS with aneuploidy and eight common protein biomarkers detected 51% of the cancers at 98.9% specificity. We found that part of the power of A-PLUS could be ascribed to a single feature-the global reduction of AluS subfamily elements in the circulating DNA of patients with solid cancer. We confirmed this reduction through the analysis of another independent dataset obtained with a different approach (whole-genome sequencing). The evaluation of Alu elements may therefore have the potential to enhance the performance of several methods designed for the earlier detection of cancer.

RESUMO

Laryngoscopy images play a vital role in merging computer vision and otorhinolaryngology research. However, limited studies offer laryngeal datasets for comparative evaluation. Hence, this study introduces a novel dataset focusing on vocal fold images. Additionally, we propose a lightweight network utilizing knowledge distillation, with our student model achieving around 98.4% accuracy-comparable to the original EfficientNetB1 while reducing model weights by up to 88%. We also present an AI-assisted smartphone solution, enabling a portable and intelligent laryngoscopy system that aids laryngoscopists in efficiently targeting vocal fold areas for observation and diagnosis. To sum up, our contribution includes a laryngeal image dataset and a compressed version of the efficient model, suitable for handheld laryngoscopy devices.

RESUMO

Iron is an essential element involved in various metabolic processes. The ferritin family of proteins forms nanocage assembly and is involved in iron oxidation, storage, and mineralization. Although several structures of human ferritins and bacterioferritins have been solved, there is still no complete structure that shows both the trapped Fe-biomineral cluster and the nanocage. Furthermore, whereas the mechanism of iron trafficking has been explained using various approaches, structural details on the biomineralization process (i.e. the formation of the mineral itself) are generally lacking. Here, we report the cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) structures of apoform and biomineral bound form (holoforms) of the Streptomyces coelicolor bacterioferritin (ScBfr) nanocage and the subunit crystal structure. The holoforms show different stages of Fe-biomineral accumulation inside the nanocage, in which the connections exist in two of the fourfold channels of the nanocage between the C-terminal of the ScBfr monomers and the Fe-biomineral cluster. The mutation and truncation of the bacterioferritin residues involved in these connections significantly reduced the iron and phosphate binding in comparison with those of the wild type and together explain the underlying mechanism. Collectively, our results represent a prototype for the bacterioferritin nanocage, which reveals insight into its biomineralization and the potential channel for bacterioferritin-associated iron trafficking.

RESUMO

Background and Aim: Canine distemper (CD) caused by the CD virus (CDV) has a high mortality rate that severely affects dog populations and other terrestrial carnivores worldwide. However, the genetics of CDV strains circulating in various regions in Vietnam, especially the Mekong Delta, remains unclear. This study aimed to characterize the molecular status of CDV strains circulating in the Mekong Delta, Vietnam. Materials and Methods: Ocular/nasal swabs were collected from 550 dogs with clinically suspected CDV infection from veterinary clinics in three Vietnamese provinces. A reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction on the part of the hemagglutinin gene was performed. A phylogenetic tree was constructed to analyze the relationship between the detected CDV and GenBank sequences. Results: The molecular study demonstrated that 4.18% (23/550) of the dogs were positive for CDV. The clinical findings revealed that the positive dogs exhibited clinical signs of distemper. The phylogenetic analysis indicated that the identified CDV sequences were clustered in the same branch with the genotype Asia-1 and distantly related to the vaccine strains. Notably, the CDV sequences detected in this study were grouped with the sequences previously found in southeast Vietnam; however, they were distant from those found in the north. Conclusion: The present study confirmed the presence of CDV and to the best of our knowledge, highlighted for the first time that the CDV strains circulating in the Mekong Delta of Vietnam belong to the genotype Asia-1.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Severe hemorrhage is an uncommon yet potentially life-threatening complication of transbronchial lung biopsy. Lung transplantation recipients undergo multiple bronchoscopies with biopsy and are considered to be at an increased risk for bleeding from transbronchial biopsy, independent of traditional risk factors. We aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of endobronchial administration of prophylactic topical epinephrine in attenuating transbronchial biopsy-related hemorrhage in lung transplant recipients. METHODS: The Prophylactic Epinephrine for the Prevention of Transbronchial Lung Biopsy-related Bleeding in Lung Transplant Recipients study was a 2-center, randomized, double blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial. Participants undergoing transbronchial lung biopsy were randomized to receive 1:10,000-diluted topical epinephrine vs saline placebo administered prophylactically into the target segmental airway. Bleeding was graded based on a clinical severity scale. The primary efficacy outcome was incidence of severe or very severe hemorrhage. The primary safety outcome was a composite of 3-hours all-cause mortality and an acute cardiovascular event. RESULTS: A total of 66 lung transplantation recipients underwent 100 bronchoscopies during the study period. The primary outcome of severe or very severe hemorrhage occurred in 4 cases (8%) in the prophylactic epinephrine group and in 13 cases (24%) in the control group (p = 0.04). The composite primary safety outcome did not occur in any of the study groups. CONCLUSIONS: In lung transplantation recipients undergoing transbronchial lung biopsy, prophylactic administration of 1:10,000-diluted topical epinephrine into the target segmental airway before biopsy attenuates the incidence of significant endobronchial hemorrhage without conveying a significant cardiovascular risk. RESUMO

The analysis of cell-free DNA (cfDNA) from plasma offers great promise for the earlier detection of cancer. At present, changes in DNA sequence, methylation, or copy number are the most sensitive ways to detect the presence of cancer. To further increase the sensitivity of such assays with limited amounts of sample, it would be useful to be able to evaluate the same template molecules for all these changes. Here, we report an approach, called MethylSaferSeqS, that achieves this goal, and can be applied to any standard library preparation method suitable for massively parallel sequencing. The innovative step was to copy both strands of each DNA-barcoded molecule with a primer that allows the subsequent separation of the original strands (retaining their 5-methylcytosine residues) from the copied strands (in which the 5-methylcytosine residues are replaced with unmodified cytosine residues). The epigenetic and genetic alterations present in the DNA molecules can then be obtained from the original and copied strands, respectively. We applied this approach to plasma from 265 individuals, including 198 with cancers of the pancreas, ovary, lung, and colon, and found the expected patterns of mutations, copy number alterations, and methylation. Furthermore, we could determine which original template DNA molecules were methylated and/or mutated. MethylSaferSeqS should be useful for addressing a variety of questions relating genetics and epigenetics.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To collect a dataset with adequate laryngoscopy images and identify the appearance of vocal folds and their lesions in flexible laryngoscopy images by objective deep learning models. METHODS: We adopted a number of novel deep learning models to train and classify 4549 flexible laryngoscopy images as no vocal fold, normal vocal folds, and abnormal vocal folds. This could help these models recognize vocal folds and their lesions within these images. Ultimately, we made a comparison between the results of the state-of-the-art deep learning models, and another comparison of the results between the computer-aided classification system and ENT doctors. RESULTS: This study exhibited the performance of the deep learning models by evaluating laryngoscopy images collected from 876 patients. The efficiency of the Xception model was higher and steadier than almost the rest of the models. The accuracy of no vocal fold, normal vocal folds, and vocal fold abnormalities on this model were 98.90 %, 97.36 %, and 96.26 %, respectively. Compared to our ENT doctors, the Xception model produced better results than a junior doctor and was near an expert. CONCLUSION: Our results show that current deep learning models can classify vocal fold images well and effectively assist physicians in vocal fold identification and classification of normal or abnormal vocal folds.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: A considerable number of patients with abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA) is not eligible for standard endovascular repair. These complex cases require alternative surgical approaches including the readily available chimney graft endovascular aneurysm repair (Ch-EVAR) or sealing (Ch-EVAS). The optimal configuration for Ch-EVAR or Ch-EVAS is important for success but not yet known. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study was to analyze current data of the outcomes of in-vitro chimney graft treatment in complex AAA. METHODS: A systematic review following PRISMA guidelines was conducted including studies reporting on gutter size, main graft compression, and chimney graft compression in in-vitro configurations. RESULTS: The search resulted in 285 articles. 11 studies considering 219 individual tests could be included. Gutter size was comparable between Ch-EVAR and Ch-EVAS configurations. In Ch-EVAR set-ups, the deployed BECG were Advanta V12, VIABAHN®, and BeGraft. One type of SECG was used: VIABAHN®. The four types of main grafts (MG) deployed were: Endurant™ I/II; EXCLUDER Conformable AAA Endoprosthesis and AAA Endoprosthesis, and AFX™ Endovascular AAA Delivery System. In the EVAS-configurations, the Nellix® EVAS system was deployed. In general, SECG presented smaller gutters with higher chimney graft compression. 30% main grafts oversizing seems to give the smallest gutters without high risk of infolding of MG. Oversizing, EndoAnchors, and secondary endobag filling (in Ch-EVAS) reduced gutter sizes. CG ballooning during the entire polymer injection in Ch-EVAS prevented CG compression. CONCLUSION: In-vitro investigations provide insight in optimal Ch-EVAR and Ch-EVAS configurations for simulated complex AAA repair. The findings above might aid physicians in their planning to potential CG set-ups and can be used in future research to refine the most optimal configuration for chimney graft technique in complex AAA.

RESUMO

Breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer among Vietnamese women. This qualitative study describes and discusses the mental health challenges of women with breast cancer in Vietnam. Two-rounds of semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted among thirteen women with breast cancer and four caregivers from northern and southern Vietnam. Participants were recruited using purposive sampling technique. Data was collaboratively analyzed by qualitative content analysis using the Open Code Software version 4.02 and discussed among a team of local and international researchers. Women in the study experienced significant mental health challenges associated with their breast cancer diagnosis. Both psychological and emotional health were adversely affected. Women with breast cancer had profound concerns about how the diagnosis impacted their families. They experienced challenges in spousal relationships as well as facing social stigma and discrimination. Appropriate public health interventions should be implemented to raise society's awareness and help improve the mental health of women with breast cancer.

RESUMO

This study quantifies the association between patient reported measures (PRMs) and readmission to inform efforts to improve hospital care. A retrospective, cross-sectional study was conducted with adults who had chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or congestive heart failure (CHF) and were admitted for acute care in a public hospital in New South Wales, Australia for any reason (n = 2394 COPD and 2476 CHF patients in 2018-2020). Patient- level survey data were linked with inpatient data for one year prior to risk-adjust outcomes and after discharge to detect all cause unplanned readmission to a public or private hospital. Ninety-day readmission rates for respondents with COPD or CHF were 17% and 19%. Crude rates for adults with COPD were highest among those who reported that hospital care and treatment helped "not at all" (28%), compared to those who responded, "to some extent" (20%) or "definitely" (15%). After accounting for patient characteristics, adults with COPD or CHF who said care and treatment didn't help at all were at twice the risk of readmission compared to those who responded that care and treatment helped "definitely" (Hazard ratio for COPD 1.97, CI: 1.17-3.32; CHF 2.07, CI 1.25-3.42). Patients who offered the most unfavourable ratings of overall care, understandable explanations, organised care, or preparedness for discharge were at a 1.5 to more than two times higher risk of readmission. Respect and dignity, effective and clear communications, and timely and coordinated care also matter. PRMs are strong predictors of readmission even after accounting for risk related to age and co-morbidities. More moderate ratings were associated with attenuation of risk, and the most positive ratings were associated with the lowest readmission rate. These results suggest that increasing each patient's positive experiences progressively reduces the risk of adults with chronic conditions returning to acute care.

RESUMO

In this study, total phosphorus (P) and P released forms were measured in core sediments from the areas affected by human settlement and shrimp farming activities and the core zone of the Can Gio Biosphere Reserve, a coastal district in south Vietnam. Furthermore, ecological risk assessment and parameters controlling P release from sediments were investigated, including pH, major elements (Al-Ca-Mg-Fe), and fine fraction. The average total amount of P in the sediments varied from 287 to 669 mg/kg, with significantly lower values being observed in the mangrove biosphere reserve area. According to the results of the correlation analysis, organic matter was the primary source of P in the sediments, but the majority of the P released was inorganic. Positive correlations were found between Fe and non-apatite inorganic P (NAIP) and apatite P (AP), as well as intercorrelations between P fractions (r = 0.40-0.79, p < 0.05), suggesting that Fe might be the controlling factor of P release in the investigated sediments. The rank orders of concentrations of P forms were significantly different between the areas. The range of P forms was AP (35-248 mg/kg) > NAIP (63-201 mg/kg) > LP (labile P) (4-25 mg/kg) in the human settlement and aquaculture areas and NAIP (84-99 mg/kg) > AP (20-38 mg/kg) > LP (7-12 mg/kg) in the mangrove biosphere reserve area. Risk assessment based on the total concentration of P and the availability of P from a single extraction suggested a relatively low risk of P from sediment as an internal load in the studied areas.

RESUMO

When seeking to explain the eventual outcomes of a higher education experience, do the personal attributes and background factors students bring to college matter more than what the college is able to contribute to the development of the student through education or other institutional factors? Most education studies tend to simply ignore cognitive aptitudes and other student characteristics-in particular the long history of research on this topic-since the focus is on trying to assess the impact of education. Thus, the role of student characteristics has in many ways been underappreciated in even highly sophisticated quantitative education research. Conversely, educational and institutional factors are not as prominent in studies focused on cognitive aptitudes, as these fields focus first on reasoning capacity, and secondarily on other factors. We examine the variance in student outcomes due to student (e.g., cognitive aptitudes) versus institutional characteristics (e.g., teachers, schools). At the level of universities, two contemporary U.S. datasets are used to examine the proportion of variance accounted for in various university rankings and long-run salary by student cognitive characteristics and institutional factors. We find that depending upon the ways the variables are entered into regression models, the findings are somewhat different. We suggest some fruitful paths forward which might integrate the methods and findings showing that teachers and schools matter, along with the broader developmental bounds within which these effects take place.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the trends in colorectal cancer (CRC) in Vietnam. We aimed to investigate the trends in epidemiology and anatomical subsites of CRC in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. METHODS: Based on the Ho Chi Minh City Cancer Registry data during 1996-2015, we calculated the average annual percent changes (AAPCs) of the age-standardized incidence rates (ASRs) by sex, age groups, and anatomical subsites, using joinpoint regressions analysis. We further performed age-period-cohort (APC) analysis using the United States National Cancer Institute's web-based statistical tool to explore the underlying reason for the incidence trend. RESULTS: Over 20 years the overall ASR of CRC increased from 10.5 to 17.9 per 100,000, a 1.7-fold increase. CRC incidence elevated more rapidly in men (AAPC 4.7, 95%CI 2.2-7.3) than in women (AAPC 2.6, 95%CI 0.6-4.8). The highest and lowest increasing rates of ASRs were observed in the 50-64-year-old age group (AAPC 5.3, 95%CI 2.8-7.9) and < 50-year-old age group (AAPC 1.1, 95%CI -0.7 to 2.9), respectively. Regarding subsites, rectal cancer had the highest rate of increase (AAPC 3.3, 95%CI 1.0-5.7). Furthermore, the APC analysis indicated significant increases in CRC incidence in birth cohorts after 1975 in both genders. CONCLUSIONS: The CRC incidence in Ho Chi Minh City increased, with the more prominent rates being among men and older populations, in rectal subsites, and in people born after 1975. The upward trend of CRC incidence in Ho Chi Minh City may be due to the adoption of a westernized lifestyle.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The plasma-based epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutation testing is approved recently to use in clinical practice. However, it has not been used as a prognostic marker yet because of contradictory results. AIM: This meta-analysis aims to clarify the role of the EGFR-plasma test in prognosis for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) who have mutant tumors and receive EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs). METHODS AND RESULTS: The PubMed/MEDLINE, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar databases were searched for relevant studies by April 10, 2021. The hazard ratio (HR) from reports was extracted and used to assess the correlation of EGFR-plasma status with progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS). A total of 35 eligible studies with 4106 patients were enrolled in the final analysis. Patients with concurrent EGFR mutations in pretreatment plasma have shorter PFS (HR = 2.00, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.73-2.31, p < .001) and OS time (HR = 2.31, 95% CI: 1.89-2.83, p < .001) compared to the tumor-only mutation cases. Besides, the persistence of EGFR-activating mutations in post-treatment plasma is associated with worse PFS (HR = 3.84, 95% CI: 2.96-4.99, p < .001) and OS outcome (HR = 3.22, 95% CI: 2.35-4.42, p < .001) compared to others. Notably, the prognostic value of the EGFR-plasma test is also validated in treatment with third-generation EGFR TKI and significance regardless of different detection methods. CONCLUSION: The presence of EGFR-plasma mutations at pretreatment and after EGFR TKI initiation is the worse prognostic factor for PFS and OS in NSCLC.

RESUMO

Samples of the bimetallic-based NH2-MIL-125(Ti) at a ratio of Mn+/Ti4+ is 0.15 (Mn+: Ni2+, Co2+ and Fe3+) were first synthesized using the solvothermal method. Their fundamental properties were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectra, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), N2 adsorption-desorption measurements, and UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-Vis DRS). The as-acquired materials were used as high-efficiency heterogeneous photocatalysts to remove Rhodamine B (RhB) dye under visible light. The results verified that 82.4% of the RhB (3 × 10-5 M) was degraded within 120 min by 15% Fe/Ti-MOFs. Furthermore, in the purpose of degrading Rhodamine B (RhB), the rate constant for the 15% Fe/Ti-MOFs was found to be 2.6 times as fast as that of NH2-MIL-125(Ti). Moreover, the 15% Fe/Ti-MOFs photocatalysts remained stable after three consecutive cycles. The trapping test demonstrated that the major active species in the degradation of the RhB process were hydroxyl radicals (HO∙) and holes (h+).

RESUMO

Surfactants are frequently employed in the fabrication of polymer/graphene-based nanocomposites via emulsion techniques. However, the impact of surfactants on the electrical and mechanical properties of such nanocomposite films remains to be explored. We have systematically studied the impact of two anionic surfactants [sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS)] on intrinsic properties of the nanocomposite films comprising reduced graphene oxide in a matrix of poly(styrene-stat-n-butyl acrylate). Using these ambient temperature film-forming systems, we fabricated films with different concentrations of the surfactants (1-7 wt %, relative to the organic phase). Significant differences in film properties were observed both as a function of amount and type of surfactant. Thermally reduced films exhibited concentration-dependent increases in surface roughness, electrical conductivity, and mechanical properties with increasing SDS content. When compared with SDBS, SDS films exhibited an order of magnitude higher electrical conductivity values at every concentration (highest value of ∼4.4 S m-1 for 7 wt % SDS) and superior mechanical properties at higher surfactant concentrations. The present results illustrate how the simple inclusion of a benzene ring in the SDS structure (as in SDBS) can cause a significant change in the electrical and mechanical properties of the nanocomposite. Overall, the present results demonstrate how nanocomposite properties can be judiciously manipulated by altering the concentration and/or type of surfactant.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The burden and trend of thyroid cancer in Vietnam have not been well documented. This study aimed to investigate the trends in incidence and histological pattern of thyroid cancer in Ho Chi Minh City from 1996 to 2015. METHODS: A population-based study retrieved data from the Ho Chi Minh City Cancer Registry during 1996-2015. Trends in the incidence of thyroid cancer were investigated based on age, gender, and histology for each 5-year period. Annual percentage change (APC) in incidence rates was estimated using Joinpoint regression analysis. RESULTS: In the study period, there were 5953 thyroid cancer cases (men-to-women ratio 1:4.5) newly diagnosed in Ho Chi Minh City with the mean age of 42.9 years (±14.9 years). The age-standardized incidence rate of thyroid cancer increased from 2.4 per 100,000 during 1996-2000 (95% confidence interval [95% CI]: 2.2-2.6) to 7.5 per 100,000 during 2011-2015 (95% CI: 7.3-7.9), corresponded to an overall APC of 8.7 (95% CI 7.6-9.9). The APC in men and women was 6.2 (95% CI: 4.2-8.2) and 9.2 (95% CI: 8.0-10.4), respectively. The incidence rate in the < 45 years age group was the highest diagnosed overall and increased significantly in both men (APC 11.0) and women (APC 10.1). Both genders shared similar distribution of subtype incidences, with papillary thyroid cancer constituted the most diagnosed (73.3% in men and 85.2% in women). The papillary thyroid cancer observed a markedly increase overall (APC of 10.7 (95% CI 9.3-12.0)). CONCLUSIONS: There were appreciable increases in the age-standardized incidence rate of thyroid cancer in both genders, mainly contributed by the papillary subtype. The age of patients at diagnosis decreased gradually. The widespread utilization of advanced diagnostic techniques and healthcare accessibility improvement might play a potential role in these trends. Further investigations are needed to comprehend the risk factors and trends fully.

RESUMO

Fibrinogen-related lectins are carbohydrate-binding proteins of the innate immune system that recognize glycan structures on microbial surfaces. These innate immune lectins are crucial for invertebrates as they do not rely on adaptive immunity for pathogen clearance. Here, we characterize a recombinant fibrinogen-related lectin PmFREP from the black tiger shrimp Penaeus monodon expressed in the Trichoplusia ni insect cell. Electron microscopy and cross-linking experiments revealed that PmFREP is a disulfide-linked dimer of pentamers distinct from other fibrinogen-related lectins. The full-length protein binds N-acetyl sugars in a Ca2+ ion-independent manner. PmFREP recognized and agglutinated Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Weak binding was detected with other bacteria, including Vibrio parahaemolyticus, but no agglutination activity was observed. The biologically active PmFREP will not only be a crucial tool to elucidate the innate immune signaling in P. monodon and other economically important species, but will also aid in detection and prevention of shrimp bacterial infectious diseases.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Salmonella is one of the leading causes of zoonotic and foodborne infectious outbreaks in humans and poultry and its associated environment is a potential reservoir of Salmonella. In recent years, the antibiotic resistance of bacteria, including Salmonella, has been increasing. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and antibiotic resistance of Salmonella isolated from poultry, its environment, and the pest animals found at poultry farms and households of the Mekong Delta, Vietnam. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 3,055 samples were collected from the broiler farms and households of the Mekong Delta from 2017 to 2020. Salmonella was isolated using conventional methods (culturing on selective agar - BPLS and biochemical test) and the isolates were examined for antibiotic resistance against 14 antibiotics using the disk diffusion method. RESULTS: Salmonella was isolated from 181 samples (5.92%), which included chicken feces (7.67%), pest animals (5.98%), and environmental samples (4.33%). The environmental samples comprised bedding (5.88%), feed (5.48%), and drinking water (0.70%). The prevalence of Salmonella was the highest in rats (15.63%) and geckos (12.25%) followed by ants (2.83%) and cockroaches (2.44%); however, Salmonella was not isolated from any fly species. Most of the isolates exhibited resistance to 1-9 antibiotics. The isolates were relatively resistant to chloramphenicol (62.98%), tetracycline (55.80%), ampicillin (54.14%), and sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim (53.04%). Sixty-two multiple resistance patterns were found in the isolates, with ampicillin-cefuroxime-chloramphenicol-tetracycline- sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim being the most frequent (7.18%). CONCLUSION: The chickens, husbandry environment, and pest animals at poultry farms and households were found to be important Salmonella sources in the Mekong Delta. Salmonella isolates from these sources also exhibited a wide-ranging resistance to antibiotics as well as several resistance patterns. Hence, biosecurity should be addressed in poultry farms and households to prevent cross-contamination and reduce the spread of Salmonella infections.
